“Rivers don’t drink their own water,
Trees don’t eat their own fruits,
The sun does not shine for itself,
And flowers do not spread their fragrance for themselves.
Living for others is a rule of nature.
Life is good when you’re happy,
But it is much better when others are happy because of you.”
— from an ancient Sanskrit poem
Our lives fulfill a purpose when we give of ourselves
Isn’t it true? I hadn’t made this observation of Nature until having read this poem. “Living for others is a rule of Nature.” Beautiful words. I know from personal experience the times I was fully invested in serving others were the times I felt greatest contentment in life. Single acts or occupations, it left me with a sense of humility and connection. I get the same sense of connection when I plant trees. Planting trees that I know may never shade my brow, yet they will grow into magnificent trees and serve others and wildlife for decades beyond my life. It is a small act, but sometimes small acts grow into great things.
Receiving more than is given
I have found in many situations I receive more than I give from a perspective of contentment and happiness. I believe this is generally true for each of us. Make a visit to a Veterans Home or a Nursing Home. Really want to make a hit? If you have musical talent, share it with others. Go to one of the aforementioned or just out on a street corner. I guarantee people will smile and feel the warmth of the gift you have given. And you. You will be aglow with happiness because of the happiness you gave to others.
There are so many opportunities to volunteer and give of our time. Delivering meals, working at a food bank or the Salvation Army. Fergus Falls, MN, sets out flags in honor of Veterans on special holidays. This is a great effort and extra hands are always appreciated. The display is amazing and covers the City with a blanket of Patriotism. It is a beautiful sight to behold.
