I’m a photographer in spirit but I find words stir my soul with equal energy. Words inspire. One only has to look at the great works of man – the writings of man. They say a picture is worth a thousand words but I have found pictures that are worth far more – and far less. Some of the most powerful images I recall require only a few words to describe. Those few words convey the energy of the photo with such clarity little else need be said.
Words inspire in life
Have you ever tried to put a picture to words? I find it much simpler to put words to a picture. And it isn’t just words, it isn’t just a picture. As Mark Twain said, “The difference between the almost right word and the right word is really a large matter – ’tis the difference between the lightning-bug and the lightning.” I can relate to that when I read an article. A single phrase can make or break it for me. I connect to words. Thoughtful and deliberate word choice is vital to communication. Words inspire.
Images inspire without words
Here is a photo that makes me really take pause. It is a rural winter scene. Snow and fields, some slough bottom, some tree line. Very simple. But it is the near monochromatic coloration that makes “the difference between the almost right word and the right word . . .” in the realm of photography.
Mini essays on my compositions
I’ve considered writing mini essays on the images I have composed. I may do that at some point. Getting back to this photo. What do you see? Do you see desolation or do you see the abundance of life that could be supported. Again, quoting Mark Twain, “You can’t depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus.” I know how important correct focus is in creating a compelling composition, but what if my “imagination is out of focus” when I take the shot. Probably a disappointing effort.
The photo above reminds me of a Charlie Beck Wood Cut Print. For some reason, I think He would approve of this photo. I had the privilege of receiving Art instruction from Charlie Beck. An exceptional man with an exceptional gift and exceptional vision. That being said, I see abundance when I look at this photo. Good farm land – good land for wildlife. I see a Farmer who loves his land. A Steward of the land. A Man that understands he does not own the land any more than the land owns him. A good Man.
Closing
That is about all I have to say today. I got a late start and now my mind feels peaceably empty. Usually I write my posts in the AM hours. I am far more productive and my imagination seems a bit more lively. If you have any questions for me, kindly drop a line. If you would like to purchase either of the photos included today, you can do so at RedBarnProject.com. Check it out. I hope this day has brought a sense of calm to your life. I hope for you, this day, Peace.
