“you give up sixty seconds of peace of mind.” – Henry David Thoreau. Food for thought. The mind works in amazing ways. It is truly a marvel. How the scent in the air can unfold a raft of thoughts, memories and sentiments. Thinking of a name. Your mind is totally blank to the name, but you think on it. And, POP, you recall the name. Where did it come from? How did you recall it? Amazing. I’ll add to Henry David Thoreau’s words: For every minute we live, we have the opportunity to witness another miracle!
Don’t let the sun go down on your anger
Another worthy gem is: Don’t let the sun go down on your anger. Ephesians 4:26. Great guidance. As I was mentioning above, I am amazed how the mind can work. Sometimes a thought is gone in a flash, not to be recalled. Other times, our brain clings to a word or an experience and won’t let it go. We ruminate, we obsess. This is unhealthy behavior. We can become angry over many things. Cold winter weather, loss, relationship woes – be they personal or professional. Even something as small as getting cut off in traffic.
Sometimes we need to forgive ourselves
But that is all behind us. We only have the present and “for every minute you remain angry, you give up sixty seconds of peace of mind.” Let it go. It may take time, but let it go. Let the anger float away while you seek that precious peace of mind. Sometimes we need to forgive others for the anger we feel. Sometimes we need to forgive ourselves.
Let it go
Let’s flip this around. For every minute you have peace of mind, you nix sixty seconds of potential anger. When I read it that way, it really hits home that I want to seek peace of mind and avoid negative feelings. Peace of mind.
We’ve all faced challenges in life, we’ve all experienced loss. There may be times when anger is a normal and healthy part of a grieving process, but don’t hold onto it. Let it go. Let love grow. There is a great song by Eric Clapton, “Let it Grow,” that speaks to the the importance of letting love grow. Here are the final three stanzas:
Eric Clapton, “Let it Grow”
Time is getting shorter
And there’s much for you to do
Only ask and you will get what you are needing
The rest is up to you
Plant your love and let it grow
Let it grow, let it grow
Let it blossom, let it flow
In the sun, the rain, the snow
Love is lovely, so let it
Let it grow, let it grow
Let it blossom, let it flow
In the sun, the rain, the snow
Love is lovely, so let it grow
