Woke up today in darkness, as always during this time of year. It was 3 degrees above zero. Calm. Booming ice from the lake breaks the silence at it’s own intervals. The Oak Trees on the property tower overhead as they have for generations. Still and steadfast. I really enjoy the Oaks. What do they know? What have they seen? If Oaks could talk. I have over 100 on the five acre hobby farm. Lots of leaves in the Fall. I mulch them and return them to the soil.
Squirrels gather leaves and snip twigs for nest building in the higher forks of the Oaks. They spend hours building nests – and then the next straight-line wind that blows through takes them down. The Squirrels don’t seem to get discouraged. They start over. They rebuild. I’ve said in earlier comments we can learn much from observing nature – even squirrels.
I’ve witnessed on numerous occasion Squirrels free falling from some of the highest branches. Either they have gotten in a scrap with another Squirrel and fallen, or just slipped on their own. They hit the ground with an audible thud – then continue on with whatever it was they were doing. Squirrels are resilient – they move on. We can learn much from observing Squirrels.
Thanksgiving Day every day
I have much to be thankful for – even the lessons offered by Squirrels. We all do. Might have to look for it, but it’s there. Just like beauty. There is beauty to behold in all of nature.
It is common practice to extend Thanksgiving Greetings on this day, but shouldn’t we do so every day? Get outside today. Breathe deep. Look at the trees. Watch a Squirrel. We all have much to be thankful for – so, Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours – on this day and every day! Peace.
P.S. – The Squirrel image in this post is available at my website, RedBarnProject.
